The Mines of Spain Recreation Area is a terrific trail running destination in the Dubuque area. Located only a few miles south of downtown, Mines of Spain features 21 miles of scenic hiking trails that can be used for trail running. The trails include old logging roads and more rugged trails, with some hilly options leading to limestone bluffs and scenic overlooks. The landscape is a nice mix of forest and prairie.
This page has a description of all the trails, and this trail map is a good resource on trail distances and level of difficulty. For a run of decent length, it will be necessary to stitch together a few of the trails. The EB Lyons Interpretive Center is a good resource for more trail information, and also a good start point for some of the trails.
