Front St. Along Susquehanna River & City Island

Google Street View

One of the most scenic runs in Harrisburg is on Front St. along the Susquehanna River. It’s part of the 20-mile Capital Area Greenbelt trail. Overall, one can do ~4.5 miles along the water, with an optional 1.5 mile loop of City Island. There are great views of the river most of the way, and nearly the entire route is on a dedicated, paved multi-use path.

The west end starts in Uptown Harrisburg at Front St. & Vaughn St. Run for 3.4 miles along the river. The first ~2 miles features some lovely older homes. Then you’re skirting downtown Harrisburg. At 3.4 miles, there’s an option to do a 1.5 mile loop of City Island, which includes the scenic, pedestrian Walnut St. bridge and paths around the island, which includes a minor league ballpark. Continue for another 1.2 miles to Phoenix Park.

Add-Ons: The Capital Area Greenbelt trail continues inland from Phoenix Park, along Spring Creek. There are a couple of on-road sections.
