Argostoli Waterfront Promenade

Creative Commons 3.0: George Tekmenidis

This is a gorgeous waterfront run in Argostoli, Kefalonia’s capital. Overall, there are nearly 10 km of waterside promenade or roadside sidewalks, with great views of the harbor, the Ionnian Sea, and surrounding hillside.

We’ve mapped a 12.5 km loop, but you can also choose a section. Follow the path from its northern end at Koutavos Lagoon for 2 km to the center of town, making sure to run the pedestrian De Bosset Bridge over to the Argostoli Marina. Spectacular views! Continuing north, follow the waterside path for 2.5 km to the Sinkholes of Argostoli at end of the peninsula. Wind your way around the hillside lighthouse (pharos), and then run on the western side, on the interior road for 0.5 km. Then, join the trail alongside Limanski Beach & Piniatoros Beach, rejoining the road for 0.5 km. The final section crosses back to the east part of the island (an 80m climb), using Οδός OSKARS Rd., passing the Saint Gerasimos Church, and Gerasimou Germeni to the center and then back to the Lagoon.

Non-Loop Option: You can just stay on the eastern side, anywhere between Koutavos Lagoon and the Lighthouse.

Note: On the marina side of the De Bosset Bridge, there’s a scenic road above the water headed toward Agios Konstantinos Beach, but there’s no shoulder/sidewalk.

Essentials
  • Full loop is 12.5 km (7.8 miles). Or, focus on the 5-6 km on the eastern side
  • 126m (318 feet) -- most of it in the crossing from west to east
  • Argostoli, or for full loop, Koutavos Lagoon
