Kefalonia, Greece

A Focus on Waterfront Routes on the island of Kefalonia

Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) is the sixth largest island in Greece and the largest of the Ionian Islands of western Greece. The island has experienced a decline in population due to numerous earthquakes, and a major forest fire in 1990. There are some lovely coastal areas and beaches, with the interior of the island quite mountainous, with fairly open terrain. The best opportunities for running on Kefalonia are on several seafront promenades and quieter waterfront roads.

The best place to run on Kefalonia is the 10+ km of lovely waterfront roads and paths in the capital of Argostoli. Other good spots are around Skala Beach, Poros, and Lixouri. There are extensive trail running opportunities in the island’s interior, with the National Park at Mount Ainos offering some of the best options.

Kefalonia has delightful, sunny weather much of the year. But runners should note that it can be very hot in summer. Most of the terrain on the island is quite exposed.
