The Adirondack Rail Trail is a welcome addition to the Lake Placid area running scene! Opened in 2023, this rail trail currently runs for 25 miles between Lake Placid and Fleetwood, passing through Saranac Lake, with an additional 9 miles to Tupper Lake under construction. The trail features a firm, stone dust surface, with ~2.5 miles paved in the Saranac Lake area. The landscape is mainly wooded, with some lakes along the way and some mountain views. Pro Tip: A Treat in Fall!

The Lake Placid start is at the Train Depot off Station St. It’s mainly wooded, passing through sections of the Adirondack Wilderness. At 5.2 miles is the Scarface Hiking Trail (a challenging trail run). In the Saranac Lake area, the trail passes just to the east of Lake Flower (though not close enough for lake views). The grade is gentle. Don’t miss the Adirondack Carousel near the Saranac Lake terminus of the trail!

NEW: The final 9 miles to Tupper Lake is expected to open in the fall of 2025, making the trail 34 miles total.
