Adirondack Rail Trail

The Adirondack Rail Trail is a welcome addition to the Lake Placid area running scene! Opened in 2023, this rail trail connects the resort towns of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. The trail features a stone dust surface for 7.5 miles and is paved for the 2.5 miles in the Saranac Lake area.

The Lake Placid start is at the Train Depot off Station St. It’s mainly wooded, passing through sections of the Adirondack Wilderness. At 5.2 miles is the Scarface Hiking Trail (a challenging trail run). In the Saranac Lake area, the trail passes just to the east of Lake Flower (though not close enough for lake views). The grade is gentle. Don’t miss the Adirondack Carousel near the Saranac Lake terminus of the trail!

NOTE: The overall plan is for the trail to continue for another 24 miles to Tupper Lake. A 15-mile section between Saranac Lake and Floodwood is scheduled to open in late 2024, and the final 8.5 miles to Tupper Lake will be completed at a future date.
