This is a terrific ‘runseeing’ tour of Liège, featuring a nice variety: historic centre, the Montagne de Bueren stairs, scenic path along the Meuse River, Guillemins Railway Station, and two lovely parks. It’s 5.5 km, and can be combined with our river path routes for a longer run.
Start in the historic part of Liège on the west bank of the Meuse River, at the Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Paul de Liège. A good connector through the historic centre is mainly pedestrianized Rue Vinâve d’Île. Run west, past the beautifully restored Royal Opera of Wallonia, and then along the Place du Marché, passing Place Saint-Lambert and the Le Palais des Princes-Évêques, with nice views of the Citadelle. At the Wallonia Museum, there’s a unique, heart-pounding section up the 374 stairs of Montagne de Bueren, a long stone staircase climbing the hill at the heart of the old town, with city views from the top.
After doing the stairs, head north briefly, crossing the Pont Maghin to the east bank of the Meuse. Run for 2 km south along the river path to Parc Boverie and enjoy 1.5 km in this lovely riverside park. Just short of the full loop, take the Passerelle La Belle Liégeoise (pedestrian bridge), to take Rue Paradis to the fantastic, futuristic Guillemins Railway Station, designed by the famous architect Calatrava. Take Rue Guillemins north into Parc d’Avroy, and head north through this nice riverfront park. A cycle path parallels Bl. d’Avroy north to the centre.
Add-Ons: Can mix and match with our routes along the Meuse & Ourthe rivers.
- 9.3 km (5.7 miles)
- Flat, except the 375 stairs of Montagne de Bueren
- Area around Cathédrale Saint-Paul de Liège
