Litchfield: White Memorial Conservation Center

Kelsey Perrett

The White Memorial Conservation Center is a terrific spot for some trail running, with something for all abilities. There’s a nice variety of terrain, including forest, lake, and some more open areas. This parcel of conservation land right in Litchfield is also the go-to training zone for local cross country teams. Most of the trails are at least moderately hilly. This trail map has excellent details on trail features, level of difficulty, and distances.

For those wanting an easier trail run, we recommend using the trails not designated as ‘rocky’ on the trail map. Another easier option is to run on some of the roads in White Memorial that are closed to vehicles.  Among the better options for a longer trail run is the Mattuck Trail, though it is rocky and hilly.

Note: Runners are requested to NOT run on the 1-mile boardwalk, which is part of the Little Pond Loop trail, as it is fragile. Please walk this section if

Hi…Thank you for sharing our trails but running is not allowed on the Little Pond Boardwalk. It is just too fragile a construction to stand the pounding of runners. We do, however encourage you to use any of our other 39 miles of trails! The venerable Litchfield Hills Road Race course (run every June for over 40 years) is through our property. Please come see us and remember that the Boardwalk is reserved for walking, observing nature, and simply quiet reflection.
