Known as the ‘Queen City’, Bangor is the third largest city in Maine. Located on the Penobscot River, Bangor has been a major center for the lumber and shipbuilding industries. Our guide to running in Bangor includes the nearby Orono and Old Town areas. This excellent trail map of the Bangor & Orono areas is a helpful resource.
The best places to run in Bangor are short trails on both sides of the Penobscot River, which can be combined with the trail along Kenduskeag Stream. Bangor City Forest has 15 miles of trails with something for everyone. In Orono, we enjoy running on the 1.8 mile trail along the Stillwater River, which can be combined with the University of Maine campus & DeMerrit Forest trails just across the river. Other good trail running options in the area include Caribou Bog Conservation Area, Rick Swan Trail System at Perch Pond, & Hirundo Wildlife Refuge.
Runners should note that winters in the Bangor area are very cold and snowy. Many of the trails are used for winter recreation activities.
