Braga, Portugal

CC 4.0

Braga is the fourth-largest city in Portugal. Located in the northwestern part of the country, Braga is an important entrepreneurial and technological centers in Portugal. It’s also a popular visitor destination for its historic center, Roman architecture, variety of geography, and beaches along the Cávado River. There are some decent running options in Braga, plus an excellent trail running network in the hills and valleys nearby.

The best place to run in central Braga is the linear park path along the Rio Este. We’ve also put together a ‘runseeing‘ tour of the Centro histórico, which features lovely parks and important historic & architectural highlights. There are also some easy, shaded off-road paths along the Cávado River in Vila de Prado, just north of Braga. A fun hill challenge on a paved trail is the 2 km, 100m ascent up Monte Picoto. Trail runners will find great variety & scenery on the 280 km network of trails in the area’s hills & river valleys.

Runner Notes: Just outside town, there are numerous hilly areas. Also, plan for summer heat and strong sun.

There’s a large choice of accommodations in the center of Braga, between the N101 and the N14. One factor is whether you want to stay in or near the Centro histórico.

For best access to the Ecovia route, it’s ~1 km south of the Centro histórico, off Av. Liberdade.
