Georgetown, Guyana

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. It is situated at the mouth of the Demerara River. Nicknamed the “Garden City of the Caribbean”, Georgetown is also known for its British and Dutch colonial influenced architecture. The scene for running in Georgetown is a mixed bag. There aren’t any large parks or longer paths, and the weather is challenging for running. Our four recommended routes are near each other and can be mixed & combined.

The best place for a run in Georgetown is the Seawall, where the unique experience is to run atop it! Our Downtown Tour features tree-lined streets and historic buildings, and the small but verdant Guyana National Park. The Guyana Botanical Gardens are a also a nice spot for a run, either standalone or combined with our other Georgetown routes. And, two recent improvements to the Georgetown running scene: the new Demerara River Bridge, which has a 2.8 km pedestrian path, and the renovated Joe Vieira Park, scheduled to open in 2026.

Runner Notes: Georgetown’s climate is hot year-round, with the wetter season being more humid. Also, it rains — a lot. Crime and pickpocketing is in issue in Georgetown. Take the proper precautions.
