Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located 2,000 km off the southeast coast of Africa, and east of Madagascar. Most of the 1.5 million population lives on the main island, Mauritius. It’s a popular vacation destination, attracting 1.5 million visitors annually, for its scenic beaches and tropical scenery. The island is 60 km long and 45 km wide. The situation for running on Mauritius is a bit challenging. Most of the relatively few roads lack a good shoulder or sidewalk. The interior is rougher roads and hilly, remote terrain. The beaches tend to be softer sand and not great for running. Mauritius is becoming increasingly popular as a major trail running destination.
This guide is focused on the best places to run on Mauritius main island. We’ve organized it around the main coastal towns, starting with a ‘runseeing’ tour of the capital, Port Louis. We’ve also pointed out some of the easier trail running options in Bras D’Eau National Park, Black River Gorges National Park, and some other choice spots. Note there are also some running paths within some of the major resort hotels on Mauritius.
Runners should note that Mauritius weather is warm to hot and humid, with only a few degrees temperature variation between winter and summer. Also, very few of the roads have a shoulder/sidewalk, so use caution.
