Porto Alegre, Brazil

Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The city lies on the eastern bank of Guaíba Lake, where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon. Porto Alegre is an important commercial center, and also a popular visitor destination. The best running in Porto Alegre is on lakefront paths, and some city parks.

There are essentially three great runs in Porto Alegre. The signature spot is the 4 km Orla do Guaíba waterfront path. Also centrally located is the fantastic Parque Farroupilha, which has grand paths and a running track. Combine the ‘Orla’ or the Parque with a jaunt around the Historical Center. In Ipanema in the city’s South Zone, the Calçadão de Ipanema is another scenic waterfront run. Just north of there, trail runners should check out the Parque Natural Municipal Morro do Osso.

Runner Notes: Summers are hot and humid!!

Porto Alegre features a humid subtropical climate. It is warm to hot year-round. Summers are steamy, with high temperatures of 31C (88F), and high dew point. Humidity is a major factor in summer. Winters are pleasant, with highs in the 20C (68F) range, and nights dipping to 10C (50F). Porto Alegre’s 1500m (66 inches) of annual rainfall is well spread out.

We recommend staying in the area of the Historical Center, which provides good access to the Orla waterfront path and Parque Farroupilha.

There are several branches of the Track&Field chain of running stores. See the Overview Map for locations.
