Joyama Park and Zenkō-ji

Wikimedia Commons

Joyama Park is a popular green space near the center of Nagano. It’s newly renovated as of 2021, and visitors flock here for the pristine paths and beautiful cherry blossoms. We recommend starting at the main entrance near the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum. A loop around the main part of the park is 1 km, but there are several points of interest nearby. Runners may enjoy exploring the historic shrines and temples of Zenkō-ji, a Japanese national treasure. From here, paths lead south to Zenkoji Nakamise Street, a pedestrian-only shopping center. We’ve mapped a quick 4.4 km route around the area.

A couple of notes: It’s best to go early to avoid crowds. Also, take care not to disturb others who may be praying or meditating at the temple grounds.

Essentials
  • 4.4 km (2.7 miles)
