Destination Run: Lake Suwa Loop

Wikimedia Commons

Lake Suwa, located between Okaya and Suwa in the south part of the Nagano prefecture, is a worth-it destination run. This large lake, located 90 km south of Nagano is surrounded by cherry blossoms, parkland, and a gravel path looping around its shore. There are lovely views of the water and surrounding mountains along this 16 km (10 miles) lake loop. It’s a ~1 hour train ride from Nagano.

Runners can start anywhere along the water to complete this loop, but the Okaya Train Station on the west bank is a logical choice. Okaya Kohan park is nearby, and runners can jog clockwise along the north bank of the river to Suwa. Suwa Lakeside Park is one of highlights of the path. Eventually, runners will cross a footbridge over the Tenryu River to return to the start.
