Laconia is considered the ‘gateway’ to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The best option for running in the Laconia area is the WOW Trail and Winnisquam Scenic Trail, which combine for 4.3 miles of continuous running between Lakeport and Belmont, passing through Laconia. It’s mix of lakeside sections and a bit inland. The trails are well waymarked.
The WOW Trail is a running favorite in the Lake Winnepesaukee region. The paved rail-trail follows the active corridor of the Winnepesaukee Railroad. It runs for 2.7 miles rom Elm Street in Lakeport to downtown Laconia and then on to the Belmont town line at the Leslie E. Roberts Beach & Recreation Area. There are a couple of especially nice sections in Lakeport along Opechee Bay, and then along Lake Winnisquam (New Hampshire’s fourth-largest lake) in the Laconia area.
At the Leslie E. Roberts Beach & Recreation Area, the trail continues as the Winnisquam Scenic Trail for another 1.6 miles to the trail’s western end at Belmont’s Osborne’s Agway. It’s mainly inland, with a short section along the lake at around Mile 4.
