Wine Roads & Trails Near Stellenbosch

Google Street View

Just outside the center of Stellenbosch, there’s a large network of quiet wine roads that make for some scenic running. These rolling hill roads lead past numerous wineries, with wide open views of the valley and nearby mountains. Below we recommend a few areas to create your own route. Some are generally dirt roads and some are unnamed. NOTE: these roads lack a shoulder or sidewalk, but are not overly trafficked. Run opposite traffic and use caution!

Area West of Stellenbosch. Large number of wineries, and lots of quiet roads. Park in the area of Devon Valley School near Le Jardin Hotel and run the quiet roads off Devon Valley Road.

Banhoek Conservancy Area. Located east of Stellenbosch, in the valley of Hottentots-Holland Mountain. Wonderful network of trails popular for trail running, cycling, and hiking. The easier run is the jeep track. More challenging running on the 30 km of mountain trails. Entry at the Bethlehem Farm Gate.  INFORMATION   TRAIL INFO

There’s also a good network of hilly, quiet roads passing by numerous wineries. Enjoy the roads just south of the R310 and west of Kylemore.

North of Stellenbosch.

  • A good network of quiet roads passing wineries is north of the M23, on either side of the R304. Simonsig Wine Estate is a good anchor point.
  • Another great area is the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy. Nice collection of trails in the Knorhoek Valley, combining loops on the Uitkyk and Muratie wine estates. Start from the Dirtopia Trail Centre at the Muratie Wine Estate. Combo of run and wine tasting!  INFO
  • Plaisir Wine Estate in Simondium has 20+ km of trails ranging from easy to challenging.
