Tirana ‘Runseeing’ Tour

This is a ‘runseeing’ tour of the central & historical sections of Tirana. Passing by important cultural & architectural highlights, it’s a curious mix of older/historic, brutalist Soviet-era, and modern styles. The main route runs between Skanderbeg Square in the north and Mother Teresa Square in the south. Since it’s only 4 km, add on with other downtown streets and paths along the Lana River.

We start at Skanderbeg Square, a prominent central square with historic buildings, Hero Statue, National Museum, Opera & Ballet Theatre. Run south, passing the 18-century Et’hem Bej Mosque, The Cloud, Tirana Castle (now a mall), Albanian Parliament. Run through small, pretty Riana Park, then crossing the Lana River (additional paths here!). South of the river, run through the imposing, brutalist Pyramid of Tirana, opened in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum and now a conference centre. Continue south through a small park, to Mother Teresa Square, passing the University of Arts, government buildings, Archaeological Museum, Air Albania Stadium, and Convention Centre. The return north is a straight shot along Blvd. Rugova, a main thoroughfare, which has a wide sidewalk & cycle path, and can be used as an anchor to explore additional streets.
