This is a scenic and unique trail running experience on the mainland (Tromsdalen) side of Tromsø. Just 1 km east of the Arctic Cathedral is the start of a series of 1300 steps, called the Sherpa Steps (Sherpatrappa), that climb 260m to the summit of Mount Storsteinen. This is a popular hike, so if you want to ‘run’ it, best to do it during off-peak times. The stairs pass a series of three designated viewpoints before reaching the summit, near the cable car station. The views are amazing. Note:A cable car also runs up Mt. Storsteinen, which can be used to go up or down. Pro Tip:This is a special trek do to in summer during the period of the ‘midnight sun’, where the light of the low sun is magical.

From the summit, there are easy to follow trails headed south. The first part is flat. We’ve mapped 1.2 km from the Utsiktspunkt observation deck to where the path runs into the narrow Revelva stream. Additional trails continue past there toward Bønntuva — but they are rugged and hillier.

Sherpa Steps: 1300 steps over ~1 km. We've then mapped a 2.4 km loop around the hilltop trails
An enjoyable 'runseeing' tour of Tromsø, covering its scenic & historical highlights: waterfront, Old Town, colorful wooden houses, several small parks, and the iconic Tromsø Bridge. The route can be a tad confusing -- use our map as a guideline.
The most scenic run in Tromsø! A cycle path runs along Kvaløyvegen on the western side of Tromsøya, just a few km from the city center. Great water & mountain views. At the south end, additional trails around Folkeparken and around the tip of the fjord.
Prestvannet Lake, just to the west of town, anchors an area of extensive trails that are wide & scenic with good footing. Head north through Charlottenlund to the Tromsøhallen sports complex, and south to the Mountain Viewpoint. Fairly wooded.
