Trakai is about a 30 minute train ride from Vilnius, but it’s a fantastic destination run for those who have a little extra time to spare. The waterside paths and sidewalks leading around Lake Galvė to the Trakai Peninsula Castle and Trakai Island Castle are quiet, scenic, and exceptionally well-maintained. Our route starts out from the Trakai train station for easy access, the follows Vilniaus Mazoji g. north around the bay. After about .5 km, a gravel path splits off Bernardinu g. to the RIGHT. Follow the path north along the coast to the Peninsula Castle Reserve. Pass the wooden bridge and continue around the peninsula to the next bridge (across from the tourist information center). Turn RIGHT over the bridge to take a loop around the Island Castle Reserve, winding between the water’s edge and the castle walls. Return back over the bridge, then turn RIGHT past Vityne to Karaimų g. Take the first path on the LEFT side of the road to loop back to Trakų g. and use the sidewalks to return to the start via Vytauto g.and A16. The full loop is 7.5 km.
