This is our ‘runseeing’ tour of Zanzibar’s capital, located on the island of Unguja. The mapped between the Ferry Terminal and Mnazi Grounds features a short waterfront promenade, section along the beach, a couple of parks. Add on by creating your own route around the historic center of Stone Town — a World Heritage Site.

From the ferry terminal, a paved waterfront promenade extends for ~0.6 km. For the next 0.7 km, we recommend running along the public beach. The sand is decent for running. Then, use Vuha Rd. to access Victoria Garden and the Mnazi Mmoja Grounds, where you can add with some additional paths. Overall, this would be a 5-6k out and back.

Stone Town. In addition to the mapped route, you can explore the narrow, maze-like streets of Stone Town. The area is largely pedestrianized. Best to go early or at times where it’s not crowded. Use the Old Portuguese Arch near Victoria Garden to access Stone Town, which lies between Vuga Rd. and Malindi Rd. There are numerous important landmarks: Old Fort, Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral. People’s Palace Museum.
