Running on the promenades along of Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) is great for scenic views over the waterfront. The lake is narrow but very tall with few bridges, so loop options are limited unless you are looking for an ultimate challenge. Thus, a good option is to run out-and-back along either of the lake shores, when you can easily choose your distance. Alternatively, you can use public transport to go out from the city and then run back along the lake. Bus 165 goes along western shore and tram 2 along the eastern shore. Note: ‘see’ = lake
Our route provides a taste of both shores, starting at Bürkliplatz and going 1.5 miles out in each direction. The western shore features several marinas, Arboretum park and Mythenquai with a beach (note: entrance fee required). There are more parks and marinas on the eastern shore, as well as high-end hotels, mansions and landmarks, such as the Opera house. On this side of the lake, you are treated to panoramic views of Alps rising behind the western shore. You will also see Chinese-style buildings in Chinese Garden and find Zürichsee Kreisel – an observation deck built on water in Tiefenbrunnen public beach area.
There are better opportunities to extend the run on the western side of the lake, along Seestrasse.

A 'runseeing' tour of Zurich's Old Town (Altstadt) and sights. Includes a section along the Limmat River. See Urania Observatory, St Peter's Church, Parade Square, Townhall (Rathaus), Grossmünster and the Gates of Hell sculpture.
Great run along the river, with pedestrian paths most of the way. From the Zurich Marriott, we've mapped out 8.8 km one way to the Kloster Fahr (Fahr Abbey), with numerous to cross bridges to make a shorter loop.
A 20 minute train ride from central Zurich takes you to near the top of Uetliberg, Zurich's 'local mountain'. A favorite run is along the ridge to Felsenegg. Great views of the valley and the mountains. Hilly!
Run along the perimeter of this lake on off-road paths, only 30 minutes from central Zurich by train. The full loop around the lake is 11.5 miles (18.5 km). Great views of the lake and the Alps in the distance.

Series of hilly forest paths behind the famous Dolder Grand hotel, about 4km from central Zurich. Accessible by transport. There are 5 km and 8 km paths.
