The Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve offers some good off-road running opportunities at the mid-point of the Outer Banks, just south of where US 158 cuts over to the mainland. A popular kayaking spot, the Reserve has roads and trails through maritime forest, marshes, and brackish swamplands.
The best spots for running are the 1 mile ‘multi-use trail’ that comes off Woods Rd. near Sandy Run Park, the 2 mile separated path alongside Woods Rd. north to US 158, and several miles of more wooded, more rugged trails also popular for walking/hiking.
