This is a lovely route that explores the central part of Groningen. It features canal-side paths, a tony residential section, the historic centre, and two lovely parks. Start right in the center at the futuristic Groninger Museum, with its impressive bridge approach. Then, run on the north side of the canal on the Radesingel, a pleasant residential section. Then head north for 2 km on the inner canal that rings the center. There are water views and pretty residential buildings on both sides. Cross the Visserbrug & Plantsoenbrug (bridges) into Noorderplantsoen — a lovely city park with a long lake. A loop of its pleasant paths is ~2.1 km. Come back over to the south side of the canal for a 1 km jaunt through the historic centre, using the Folkingestraat pedestrian-only street.

Here, you can end the run at 6.6 km, or add with a jaunt over to Stadspark. Lovely combination of paths through woods, fields, and some landscaped sections. A loop around Stadspark is ~2.4 km, and overall this section adds nearly doubles the route length.
Shorter/Longer Options: Eliminate either or both of the parks. For longer, combine with a section of our Outer Perimeter route, which can be accessed from Noorderplantsoen.

A run on canal-side paths and parks that form a sort of outer perimeter belt loop around the historic center of Groningen. The full loop is 16 km, but can be shortened or done in sections. Lovely views of the water, Groningen, and the green of numerous parks.
One of the best bets for a longer, seamless canal-side run in Groningen is a route just east of the city, combining the Roeierspad & Eemskanaal Noordzijde paths. Up to 12.8 km of flat, uninterrupted waterside running!
Just south of Groningen, in the Nijveensterkolk area, there's some scenic running on dedicated paths along a couple of lakes: Hoornsemeer & Paterswoldsemeer. Nice water views and a nice park around the smaller Hoornseplas lake.
The Kardingebult is among our favorite places to run in Groningen. Several km of paths along canals, around small lakes and wetlands, and open green spaces. We've mapped a 9 km loop, which can be used as a guideline for creating your own route.
