Braga is surrounded by hilly terrain, which also forms some of the city’s natural boundaries. There’s a 280km network of trails, which run through the entire county passing through hills, valleys, rivers and also through the city. There’s a good mix of difficulty in terms of length, footing, and elevation gain.
This website has excellent information on the most interesting & scenic hiking/trail running options, with maps, difficulty ratings, and elevation profiles. Among our favorites:
- Parque Picoto (see route)
- Forest Trail of the East River (Este) — fairly easy
- Parque das Sete Fontes. Fairly easy trails that are among the less hilly trail running options in Braga. This park is undergoing development to improve the trails and infrastructure.
- Several trail opportunities in the area of the Bom Jesus Sanctuary & other shrines
- Numerous other longer-distance trails that can be divided into sections
