The Waikareao Estuary Walkway is a popular 8.2 km running loop in Tauranga. The estuary is located in central Tauranga, and features a scenic mix of mangroves, wetlands and marshland. It’s also a well-known birding area. There are restrooms well interspersed.
The path surface is a mix of paved, boardwalk, and gravel. A good place to start is at a parking area at the south end. The most scenic section is along the west side of the estuary, with wonderful views. Along the east side, there are paths on both sides of the busy Pacific Coast Highway. There’s a running track just across the highway near Chapel St.
Add-Ons; Numerous options to extend the run. Just across Chapel St. at the north end of the Walkway, run along the Port to Park Cycle and Walkway. You can also join our central Tauranga route which includes The Strand and Harbour Bridge.
