Those who have endured the long, dark days of winter in northern parts of the northern hemisphere are rewarded with long summer days and late sunsets. There’s something special about going for a run as a late evening activity, while it’s still light! In honor of the summer solstice, we’ve put together a table of locations covered by Great Runs with the latest sunsets. Any city north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° latitude) experiences 24 hours of daylight around the Solstice.
Tromsø, Norway is the one city on Great Runs that’s officially above the Arctic Circle. In cities above 60 degrees latitude, it doesn’t really get dark for much of June & July, given the long twilight and sun angle. Incidentally, Ushuaia, Argentina (a gateway to Antarctica trips) is located at 55° south and is the GR city in the southern hemisphere with the latest summer sunsets — 22:12 at the solstice.
The table below shows cities covered by Great Runs that are above 55 degrees latitude, and their corresponding sunset times on June 21. Note also that the latest sunsets can be a few days after June 21, depending on latitude and location in the timezone. Also, there can be differences of nearly an hour in sunset times at the same latitude, depending on location in the time zone and how the time zones in a country are organized.
To experience the fullest effects of a “White Night” run, choose a route that’s fairly open, so you can see the sky. The light can be pretty magical!
