This is a lovely run combining a loop around Square Bir Hakeim — Perpignan’s ‘green lung’ — and the quais along the Basse River, which is a tributary of the Têt River. It’s an easy ~6 km loop. We also include an option to explore the historic center of Perpignan, which is right across the river. Can also add the nearby Têt River paths for a longer run.
Quai along the Basse River
Start with a ~2 km loop around Square Bir Hakeim. It’s a lovely green space with 200-year old plane trees, other significant trees, and the Promenade des Platanes which is lined with fountains. Then, join the quai along the Basse River. There’s a decent sidewalk along the quai, which is lined with plane trees. The Quai Sébastien Vauban/Alfred Nobel is quieter and more seamless. Follow for ~2 km west to the jardins de la Basse. For variety, loop back along the south bank quai, which changes names several times.
Add-On: Connect to the Têt River paths, using the Passerelle Archipel (pedestrian bridge) or the Pont Joffre (bridge).
Longer Option: Perpignan Historic Center (Ciudadela)
It’s fun to explore Perpignan’s historic center, called Ciudadela. Because the streets are windy & narrow, we provide a guideline, rather than a specific route. The area is largely pedestrianized. Access from the Tourist Office or Square Bir Hakeim.
From the Tourist Office right along the river, use Rude de la Barre/l’Argenterie as the anchor. This will access Republic Square (Place de la République). To the north is Basilique-Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and to the south is L’Hôtel Pams heritage building, and the impressive Palais des rois de Majorque — a restored 13th-century Gothic palace. There are paths around the palace area.

There's ~6 km of decent running along the Têt River in Perpignan. The paths are a combination of pedestrian promenade above the river, and some sections at grade that are also cycle paths. There are nice views of the river, the historic sections of Perpignan, and the snowy Pyrénées. Can add w/Basse River paths.
A scenic 6.7 km loop around Lac de Villeneuve-de-la-Raho, a lake located 15 minutes south of Perpignan. A firm gravel path encircles the lake, featuring nice water views.
South of Perpignan, a dirt path runs along the narrow Canal de Perpignan for 25+ km between the Catalunya district and Canohès, Thuir and Ille-sur-Têt. Combination of open & wooded terrain, passing by farm fields. Good shade option on a hot day!
