Running along the Seawall in Georgetown is a scenic and unique experience. The Sea Wall is a 280-mile seawall that runs along much of Guyana’s coastline, built in stages after a devastating flood in 1855 breached the coast’s earthen walls. In Georgetown, there are two ‘sections’ of the Seawall that are good for running: the 800m Kingston Esplanade, a recently improved area that is more of a waterfront promenade; and 7-8 km of Seawall that runs east to the Kitty and Subryanville neighborhoods. These are continuous sections.

Start in the area of the Kingston Esplanade in the Kingston area of Georgetown. A beautification project was completed in 2023, and there’s now a park, bandstand, and a food court. Pleasant paths go for 0.8 km from near the Fort William Frederick site) to the Round House (a historic 19th-century, decagonal structure, near the Pegasus and Marriott hotels).

You can also continue east along the Seawall, running on top of the Seawall alongside Seawall Public Rd, enjoying nice water views. It’s a unique experience, and a ‘thing to do’ for runners in Georgetown. Part of the experience is stepping off the Seawall to allow other runners to pass, as it’s not wide enough for two people. It’s safe enough to do so, as there’s a decent sidewalk below the seawall. There are nice water views from atop the Seawall. Run east as far as the Independence Arch & Seawall Public Mural, just north of the Airport. Use caution during times of high tide, rainy conditions, or rough surf!

Add-On: Just off Camp Rd., do 1.5 km laps in Guyana National Park, which is also part of our Georgetown downtown tour.
