There’s wonderful trail running at Sandy Creek Park, located just five miles north of downtown. The 782-acre park features 14 miles of trails, including a ‘Lake Trail’ around Chapman Lake. The terrain is mainly wooded, though the Lakeside Trail does have some water views. The lake is a popular spot for swimming & other water activities. There’s a beach at the south end. PRO TIP: There’s a popular trail race event here every March.
This page has good information on the trail options. There are three ‘main’ trails, which can be combined in various ways:
Lakeside Trail. This is best running option in the park. A full loop is 7.5 miles. Some parts of the trail are easier and wider, and some parts are a bit narrower and a tad more rugged.
Cooke’s Trail/Oxbow Loop. Fairly flat, much of it along a creek on dirt road and some boardwalk. 5 miles out & back. Longer Option: Continue south to the Oconee Greenway.
Buckeye Trail. Meant as an equestrian trail, but running on it is permitted. Generally wide & hilly. Mainly forested with some lake views. Up to 4.2 miles one-way.
