Basel Rhine River Run

Wikimedia Commons

The path along the Rhine River is the signature run in Basel. Starting right from the historic center of Basel, there are great views of the river and Old Town. The favored loop is from Basel’s main bridge, the Mittlere Rheinbrücke, to the Birsfelden Hydroelectric dam — a total of 7 km. Some sections are right along the water, while others are on roadside paths above the water.  Note: brücke=bridge

Start at the 800-year-old Mittlere Rheinbrücke (Middle Bridge), and cross over to the north side. Head east on the path, which is a combination paved/dirt surface, with some sections alongside the road. In 0.8 km, reach the Wettsteinbrücke (option to run along the water or on the street) and the nearby Italian Consulate, and Solitude Park/Schwarzwaldbrücke at 2 km. Keep running along the Grenzacher-Promenade to the Rheinhalde Basel Nature Reserve at the 3k mark, where a pedestrian bridge crosses over the Birsfelden dam. Cross over the bridge and head east for the return. You’ll pass through the pretty Rheinpark, the Rheinbad Breite (outdoor swimming pool), and the Basel Paper Mill, on the way to Old Town.

Options/Add-Ons: Can shorten the run by using closer bridges, such as the Schwarzwaldbrücke. For longer,

Essentials
  • 7 km (4.4 miles) loop
  • 36m (120 feet)
  • Mittlere Rheinbrücke (Middle Bridge), Old Town
