Hills & Trails Near Batumi

There are some good opportunities for runners to get some their heart rate up in the green hills and mountains around Batumi. Here are some of our top recommendations (thanks to the Wander-Lush blog for the helpful information. It’s a great resource for things to see and do in Georgia).

Anuria Mountain. This is the mountain overlooking Batumi. There are stunning views of the city and sea from the summit. It’s possible to run to the summit on a twisty road. It’s 3.4 km, with a 220m elevation gain (Note: no shoulder/sidewalk). Or, take the Argo Cable Car (accessed near the Batumi Piazza) to the top and then run on the numerous quiet, hilly roads. Gonio Cross. Massive concrete cross located 13 km south of Batumi, built in 2014. Mostly paved, steep path up to the Cross, which is rewarded by great views.  Especially pretty at sunset! This site has more detailed information and directions, including an optional return through the village of Agvia. 9.3 km out and back, 327m gain.

Mtirala National Park. Located 30 km from Batumi. Features marked hiking trails. Fairly wooded. The Tsablnari (Chestnut forest) Trail is a fairly easy, but hilly trail run along the beautiful gorge of the Chakvistskali River. There’s a 15 m high waterfall covered in ivy and Colchic box trees. 7 km out and back, 200m gain. The Tsivtskaro Trail is much more challenging, 16 km out and back, and a ~1,000m gain.

Machakhela National Park. 25 km from Batumi on the Turkish border. Features dense Colchic forests that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wetlands, and mountains. There are now three marked hiking trails: the Archangel Mountain trail (8km), the Kokoleti trail, and the Twin Waterfall trail. All paths start from the National Park Administration Centre in Acharisagmarti village. This is fairly challenging trail running.
