Best Roads for Running on Saint Martin

Boardwalk in Phillipsburg. CC: MARELBU

Running on the roads om Saint Martin can be a challenge. They are narrow, lack sidewalks, and drivers go fast. We do not recommend running on the main road. But there are a few areas with some quieter roads where you can stitch together a safe and pleasant run:

Marigot Area. This is the largest city on the French side of Saint Martin. One can put together 4-5 km off the main road, combining Dev. Galisbay out the scenic pier, a loop around Fort St. Louis and the Colorful Stairs, and then the quieter roads inland from Rue Hollande, such as Rue Concordia, Rue Flemming, Rue Spring. ROUTE MAP

  • For a killer hill, run for 1.3 km along Rue Concordia and run to the Radio Tower Outlook, which climbs 240m over 2.3 km, using a paved path & Mango Rd.

Phillipsburg Area. Phillpsburg is the capital of Sint Maarten, the Dutch side of Saint Martin. This is the best spot for some road running on Saint Martin. There’s a lovely 1 km Boardwalk, which is a festive scene and features water views. Then add with the quieter, pedestrian-oriented Front St. & Back St., which each run ~1 km in length. There’s also a decent sidewalk along some of the roads around Great Salt Pond, including Soualiga Rd., out to Pond Island. ROUTE MAP

Orient Bay. There are some quieter side streets off the main road here. There’s a nice beach, though soft sand and not great for running.

Grand Case Area. A decent 8 km route here is to run along the Bd. de Grand Case (decent sidewalk) for 2.5 km, and then out the quiet Rue de Friar’s Bay along Guichard Pond for 1 km, and then the 0.5 km La piste Anse Guichard hiking trail. Some nice water views! ROUTE MAP

Anse Marcel Area. The Rue de la Grande Caye is fairly quiet and runnable, out to the Grande Cayes Reserve (2 km). You can continue along Waldelroute Ance Marcel, which is more of a trail run, for several km around the bay. For some quiet roads and serious hills, run the Rue de l’anse Marcel to the lookout and to the Pic des Doudoux (mountain). This is a 160m climb over 1.8 km. There are also numerous quiet, hilly roads above Anse Marcel Beach. Ambitious runners can connect the roads and trails in this area.

Cole Bay/Indigo Bay Area. Quiet, hilly roads south of A.J.C. Brouwer Rd. Also a running track at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex in Cole Bay.
