Charco del Ingenio is the best place to run in San Miguel de Allende. The botanical garden and nature preserve, located just 2 km east of the historic center, features an extensive collection of cacti and other native plants. The preserve features an extensive network of paths — mainly dirt surfaced, most with decent footing. Running is permitted in the Charo. Note that the terrain is fairly open & exposed. Notes: 100 pesos admission fee, and set hours. We suggest getting information at the preserve, as there is no online map

The main paths off the entrance run east-west through the preserve. Once can put together a loop of ~4 km around the main paths. At the north end, at the Casa de la Luz de las Estrellas sculpture, there are paths that make for another ~2.4 km loop.

There are some additional hillier trails that lead to the Mirador El Charco del Ingenio (viewpoint) at the west end, and also some more rugged trail running options in the canyon area. There are also additional trails in the area of the Presa las Colonias (reservoir).

From the Center: It’s possible to run to Charco del Ingenio from the historic center. Use C. Montitlan. It’s ~2 km and HILLY, climbing some 130m.
