San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende is a city located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. It has become a popular visitor destination for its historic center, UNESCO Heritage site. Cobblestone streets are lined with colonial era buildings and a festive scene. Charming as the city is, San Miguel de Allende is a difficult city for running, with its 6,200 foot elevation, hilliness, and poor running infrastructure. There are no large parks or multi-use paths.

The best place to run in San Miguel de Allende is El Charco del Ingenio, a botanical garden with several km of paths and some more rugged trail running options as well. We’ve also designed a ‘runseeing‘ tour of the historic center and nearby parks — watch out for the cobblestone streets!  There are also several small parks that are decent for running, and two running tracks.

Runner Notes: Use caution when running on random streets outside the center — there can be stray dogs. Also, the city is at 6,200 feet (1,870m), which takes adjusting!
