Stavoren & Hindeloopen Waterfront Running

Hindeloopen Mark Lowenstein

There’s some lovely waterfront running in Stavoren & Hindeloopen — two historic coastal cities. One can also run the ~10 km between them using Westerdijk (note: no shoulder).

Stavoren. The best place to run in Stavoren is a route of up to 10.3 km exploring waterfront paths north and south. From the 11Fountains sculpture in the center, head south on a path above the water and out the pier for 1.2 km, and retrace your steps. Then, head north on the Noorderdyk cycle path for up to 3.5 km. This is especially pretty, with views to a small canal, pastoral farmland, and the sea.

Hindeloopen. A particularly charming older city, and worth a visit — we love the Schaatsmuseum, which displays the history of Dutch skating, including the famous 11 cities event (which happens rarely!). Explore the small, narrow streets and alleys, and then head south for ~1.5 km on Westerdijk and the path atop the seawall.
