Friesland is a northwest Netherlands province located on the IJsselmeer and the North Sea. It’s a mainly agricultural province, though it’s also popular with tourists for its lakes and scenic islands. The Great Runs guide to running in Friesland is focused on the coastal cities and the island of Terschelling.
We’ve developed running routes in the small coastal cities of Harlingen, Makkum, Hindeloopen, and Stavoren, which mainly feature coastal paths and canal-side trails. In the interior, there’s an extensive network of dedicated cycle trails passing through scenic farmland. One of of the best places to run in Friesland is on Terschelling, with 70 km of cycle paths along the water and through dunes, plus some great beach running.
