Terschelling Running Options

Mark Lowenstein

Terschelling is one of the biggest of the Wadden islands, and a popular visitor destination. There’s a wonderful variety of running on Terschelling, with 70 km of cycle paths and 30 km of beaches. Rather than mapping a specific route, choose from some of the options below, suiting your mood and the weather.

Waterfront Running. The most scenic running with views of the water is on the cycle path on top of the seawall. The paved path runs for up to 15 km east from West-Terschelling (the island’s largest village) to Oosterend, with views of the water on one side and the pastoral countryside on the other.

Dune Paths. On the northern side of the island, the cycle paths wind through scenic grass-topped dunes. Some of the prettiest sections are east of Midsland aan Zee. Just follow the cycle paths.

Beach Running. There are 30 km of beaches on Terschelling. The best beaches are on the northern side of the island. With the tides, some beaches are up to 500m wide. There’s pretty reliable packed sand, making for terrific beach running options.

Farmland Running. The interior of the island has a nice network of quiet roads cycle paths passing pastoral farmland. Especially pretty north and east of Midslân-Noard.

Essentials
  • Rather than specific route, we point out 'sections'
  • Some rolling hill sections in the dunes
  • Depends on section chosen. West-Terschelling is the largest village and a good start to the waterfront path
