Schloßberg, Parks, ‘Runseeing’ Tour

Creative Commons

This nearly all off-road route hits many of the main highlights of Graz: the Schloßberg castle, Stadtpark, Augarten, and a jaunt through the old town (Innere Stadt). Note: hilly!

Start on the east bank of the river at the Mursteg bridge, and begin by running on the Murinsel, a floating structure over an artificial island. Then, use the path (or stairs) for the climb up to Schloßberg (100m over 0.5 km). Enjoy this 1,000 year-old castle and great views with another 1 km along the outer paths, then using the Robert Stotz Promenade to cross into Stadtpark. This is a classic European park, with landscaped paths, monuments, Kunst Museum, & more. It’s ~1 km through Stadtpark, with options for additional paths. Exit the south end of Stadtpark onto Operning, a wide main road, and head west toward the river for 0.8 km. We then do a 1.5 km out and back along the river and paths through Augarten. Then, use Operning again to connect to Herrengasse, the main road running through old town, passing numerous Graz sites, shops, and the historic Hauptplatz.

Longer & Shorter Options. This can be a 5k route by eliminating the section to Augarten. Or, add on by exploring the Mur river paths.

Essentials
  • 7.4 km (4.6 miles)
  • 190m (623 feet)
  • Mursteg bridge, east bank
