Liepāja Canal & Lake Route

Google Street View

The paths along the Liepāja Canal & spit out into Liepāja Lake make for the most scenic run in Liepāja. Run the canal & lake routes separately, or combine for a run of just over 10km!

Canal Path. CC: Toms Balcus

Liepāja Canal. On the south bank of the Liepāja Canal, there’s a promenade that runs for 2.5 km, with nice views of the marina & water of this ‘trading canal’. The western end is at the K. Ulmanis Memorial, and extends for 0.7 km past the pedestrian bridge that crosses the canal. So, just doing the canal is an easy 5 km out & back.

Liepāja Lake. Enjoy a run at the Liepāja Lake recreational area, as a standalone run or in combination with the canal route! Cross the canal on the pedestrian bridge. Continue on a cycle path opposite the lake for 0.7 km, crossing into the park/recreation area. It’s a green space with paved and dirt paths. A spit extends for 1 km, with lake views on either side. Be sure to climb the Birdwatch Tower! Overall, it’s 2.7 km from the pedestrian bridge to the end of the spit.

Add-Ons: On the north side of the canal, there are ~1 km of paths through Raiņa Park. Can also combine the canal path with our Liepāja Seaside Park route. It’s 1 km from the K. Ulmanis Memorial.
