Aachen, Germany

Aachen, a city of 250,000 in North Rhine-Westphalia, is the westernmost city of Germany, bordering on the Netherlands and Belgium. The RWTH Aachen University is a major technology institute, with 47,000 students. We wouldn’t call the running in Aachen particularly memorable, but there’s a good network of parks and trails, plus some scenic running on farm roads and woods just outside the city.

A great way to get oriented is a ‘runseeing’ tour of Aachen, which includes the area around RWTH Aachen. Most scenic is our Stadtpark & Lousberg Hill route. Just north of Aachen, there are lovely, quiet roads past farms and fields in the Wurmtal valley and adjacent Ravelsberg. South of the city Aachen Woods — a huge, sprawling network of forest trails.
