Known as the ‘Queen City’, Bangor is the third largest city in Maine. Located on the Penobscot River, Bangor has been a major center for the lumber and shipbuilding industries. The best places to run in Bangor are short trails on both sides of the Penobscot River, which can be combined with the trail along Kenduskeag Stream. Bangor City Forest has 15 miles of trails with something for everyone. In Orono, we enjoy running on the 1.8 mile trail along the Stillwater River, which can be combined with the University of Maine campus & DeMerrit Forest trails just across the river. Other good trail running options in the area include Caribou Bog Conservation Area, Rick Swan Trail System at Perch Pond, & Hirundo Wildlife Refuge.

Runners should note that winters in the Bangor area are very cold and snowy. Many of the trails are used for winter recreation activities.

Bangor City Forest

Bangor, ME

The 686-acre Bangor City Forest is the largest interconnected trail system in the area. 17.4 miles of wooded trails. Easier options are the 4 miles of gravel roads and the 4-mile East-West Loop Trail. There are also narrower trails with trickier footing.

The Bangor area has warm, pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. In summer, temperatures reach 80F (26C), though nights do cool off. Autumn is gorgeous. Winters are the real deal: daytime highs are in the high 20sF (-2C), with lows in the single digits (-13C). Bangor averages 75 inches (189 cm) of snow. Precipitation is spread evenly throughout the year.
