Beaufort (pronounced Bu-Ford) is a city on Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s coastal Sea Islands. It’s known for its antebellum mansions, especially in the downtown historic district. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park overlooks the Beaufort River and the Woods Memorial Bridge. It’s a popular visitor destination, and a great day trip if one is spending time in the Hilton Head area. The best spots for running in Beaufort are along the graceful streets of historic downtown. We’ve also put together a Bridge Loop over to Lady’s Island Rd., and a couple of routes showcasing Beaufort’s waterfront location. For a longer off-road run, the Spanish Moss Trail is a great bet. Nearby Hunting Island State Park has excellent trails for running and a wonderful beach with firm, compact sand.
