Cheyenne is the capital and largest city in Wyoming. It’s situated on Crow Creek and Dry Creek, and is an an area of grasslands and Rockies foothills. The anchor of running in Cheyenne is the 40-mile Cheyenne Greenway system, with extensive trail running opportunities in mountain areas nearby. Note that Cheyenne sits at 6062 feet elevation — runners must factor this in!
The best places to run in Cheyenne center around the paved Cheyenne Greenway. The best and most seamless section is the ~8 miles between Western Foothills Park and Dry Creek Park. We’ve also mapped sections along Crow Creek and in southern Cheyenne. Another good route is our Cheyenne ‘runseeing tour’, which features Lions Park, Holiday Park, and the historic downtown section, including the State Capitol. For trail running, there are wonderful options within 1/2 hour of Cheyenne. A favorite is Red Mountain Open Space, which is located between Cheyenne and Fort Collins, CO.
Runner Notes: Bear in mind Cheyenne’s 6062 feet elevation. Also, winters can be cold and snowy.
