Dunedin is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the principal city of the Otago region. It’s a spectacular setting, at the head of Otago Harbour with verdant valleys and hills that are the remnants of an extinct volcano. There are wonderful options for running in Dunedin, from an extensive waterfront cycleway to beautiful parks, and extensive trail running in the surrounding hills. It’s a small city and many our running routes in Dunedin can be mix & matched.,

A scenic and easy go-to run is choosing a section of the 34 km cycleway around the harbour. Our ‘Runseeing‘ tour features historic streets & sites of the commercial centre,Woodlaugh Gardens, Dunedin’s famous Botanic Garden (which can be run standalone). There’s great beach running combining Saint Kilda Beach & Saint Clair Beach, just south of the city. For a unique and challenging experience, run Signal Hill and combine with Baldwin St. — the steepest road in the world! For some easier, forested trails head to Ross Creek. A must-do: Otago Peninsula for its rolling hills, sheep farms, and spectacular coastal views.

Runner Notes: Dunedin weather can be cloudy and it never gets that warm. Outside the coastal routes, much of the running can be hilly. For trail runners, see this brochure for the countless options in the hills outside Dunedin.
