For an easy, scenic waterfront run Dunedin, choose a section of the Otago Harbour Cycleway. This paved multi-use path, separated from the road, winds around Otago Harbour for 34 km between Port Chalmers and Lower Portobello. There are wonderful views of the harbour and surrounding hills. We’ve divided this into a couple of sections, but click here for additional information and the full map. Pro Tip: A bike ferry runs between Port Chalmers and Portobello.
North Section: Dunedin to St. Leonards. This 5.7 km section of the cycleway is particularly scenic. Start off Wickliffe St. neat the Otago Yacht Club and head north along the cycleway, enjoying the nice views. You’ll pass through Ravensbourne and Maia. We end the route near the St. Leonards Yacht Club, but the cycleway continues for another 5 km north to Port Chalmers.
Dunedin to Portobello Section. This section, known as the Otago Harbour Trail (Te Awa Ōtākou), goes for up to 17 km between Dunedin and Portobello, mainly paralleling Portobello Rd. Start at Wharf St./Portsmouth Dr. in Dunedin, and head south along the harbour. Cross Andersons Bay Inlet and follow the cycle path alongside Portobello Rd. for as long as you like! There are wonderful harbour views the whole way, though you do see/hear car traffic. Our route ends in Portobello, but the cycleway continues for another 3 km to Lower Portobello. Pro Tip: A bus runs along Portobello Rd., so it’s possible to run one-way and take the bus back!
