For folks visiting Fiji for a vacation, Great Runs has developed a running guide! Fiji is a popular visitor destination for its delightful weather, beaches, and tropical rainforests. Though Fiji is comprised of some 300 islands in the southwest Pacific, nearly 90% of its 750,000 population live on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. This guide to the best places to run on Viti Levu is focused on the most scenic coastal and beach running, plus trail running options in the mountainous interior.
The signature run on Viti Levu is the seafront promenade in Suva, Fiji’s capital, which can be combined with our ‘runseeing‘ tour of the city, including parks and key sites. In Nadi, on the west coast, there’s nice running on Wailoaloa Beach and also the palm-lined roads around Denarau Island. In the north, there’s some nice road and coastal running in Volivoli. We also point out the best beaches for running on the island. Near Suva, there are some easy trails through lush rainforest in Colo-I-Suva Forest Park. Koroyanitu National Park features more moderate to challenging trail running, including the hike to Mt. Batilamu.
Runner Notes: Fiji’s weather is sunny and delightful, but can be hot – use the right precautions! Also, the main roads generally don’t have sidewalks or a good shoulder. There are plentiful quiet interior roads that can be explored by the adventurous runner, but they are dirt-surfaced, hilly, and can be remote.
