Newcastle is a coastal city in the Hunter District of New South Wales. The city is located on the southern bank of the Hunter River mouth. The northern side is dominated by sand dunes, swamps and multiple river channels. It’s a popular coastal city, known for its beaches on the Tasman Sea. There’s wonderful running in Newcastle, with numerous waterfront paths, lovely parks, and some nearby conservation areas for trail running.
One of the best places to run in central Newcastle is the Bathers Way coastal path. Also nearby is the path along Throsby Creek. Just across the way, the Stockton Cycleway is a scenic path along the Hunter River. For a good longer-distance run, head to the Fernleigh Track in Adamstown. A great ‘destination’ run is the Watagan Cycle Track along Cockle Bay. For some terrific trail running, we love the Glenrock Conservation Area and Blackbutt Reserve.
Newcastle weather is wonderful for running year-round, with warn summers and mild winters.
