Phnom Penh, Cambodia

CC: Mao Piseth

Phom Penh is the capital and most populous city in Cambodia. It’s also the country’s economic, industrial, and cultural center. It’s also a major visitor destination for its historic architecture, attractions, and location on the Tonlé Sap, Mekong, and Bassac Rivers. Running in Phnom Penh can be a challenge, given the city’s density, traffic, air quality, and steamy weather. The main roads have many lanes of traffic and the smaller roads often don’t have proper sidewalks. But there are a few decent running options in the central, historical part of the city. Our thanks to Lena Andersson of Go! Running Tours for her Phnom Penh suggestions!

The best place to run in Phnom Penh is the path through Sisowath Riverside Park. This can be combined with our 8k ‘Runseeeing Tour‘, which includes Independence Monument, Wat Bottom Park, the Royal Palace area, Wat Phnom Daun Penh. Also in the area, you can work in Koh Pich, or some roads on Chroy Changvar peninsula. Runners also love doing loops on the Olympic Pathway perimeter around the Olympic Stadium, which also features a running track.

Runner Notes: Be aware of Phnom Penh’s heat, and occasional poor air quality.

Phnom Penh has a tropical wet climate. Runnners should be aware that it’s hot year-round, with daytime temperatures consistently 32-35C (90-95F), and steamy nights. There are distinct wet and dry seasons, with monsoonal rains that can occur May-November.

For access to the best running options in Phnom Penh, try to stay in the central section close to the river, inside Highway 1. There’s a wide choice of accommodation.
