Saranac River Trail, SUNY Plattsburgh Campus, Rugar Woods

Google Street View

The Saranac River Trail offers another opportunity for a waterfront run in Plattsburgh. This paved multi-use trail follows the Saranac River & Pine St. for nearly 2 miles, featuring some nice water views.

SUNY Plattsburgh & Rugar Woods. Toward the southern terminus of the trail, it’s pleasant to take a jaunt around the SUNY Plattsburgh campus, which features a nice network of pedestrian paths and some lovely buildings. It’s nearly 1 mile north through the campus to Cornelia St. There’s also a running track at Field House next to the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Just south of the ice arena, there are several miles of trails around Rugar Woods. The trails are mainly soft-surfaced, combination of open and wooded terrain. It’s a popular spot for cross-country running meets. This link shows options for 5-, 6- and 8-kilometer courses.

Add-On: For a longer run, head north along Durkee St. into MacDonough Park, and continue to Peace Point Park on a combination road & path, to enjoy some great views of Lake Champlain. This adds up to 2.5 miles out & back. Just south of Peace Point Park, you can also connect to the Terry Gordon Bike Path. A long run in Plattsburgh combining the these two paths & Peace Point Park would be 10 miles.
