For an easy 5k along Lake Champlain, we love the run along the Terry Gordon Bike Path. This paved rail-trail follows the still active CP Rail Line south for 1.5 miles, featuring great views of Lake Champlain. This whole area is the former military barracks and Fort Scott was an important fort during the War of 1812 and thereafter. The path passes by the War of 1812 Museum, where there are some additional paths in the parks. Our thanks to Michael Fuchs for his help with this route!
Longer Option: Head north from the trailhead on Empire State Trail, then RIGHT on Dock St., following the paths out to the U.S.S. Lake Champlain Memorial and Peace Point Park, where there are spectacular views. This section is 0.6 miles. From there, retrace your steps, or run for 1 mile to connect to the Saranac River Trail, on a combination road & dedicated path, passing through the riverfront McDonough Park.
- 3.1 miles (5 km) out & back; Add-On to Peace Point Park is 1.2 miles out & back
- 66 feet (20m)
- North trailhead is at Hamilton & Jay St.
- Good parking off Hamilton & Jay St., or at Plattsburgh Veterans Memorial Park
